Operation Eyesight - for all the world to see

Seventy-five per cent of the world's blindness is avoidable. Through Operation Eyesight’s blindness prevention and treatment programs, Canadians have the opportunity to improve the lives of individuals and communities in the developing world.

Operation Eyesight Universal is the original Canadian response to global blindness. Dedicated to eliminating avoidable blindness, this organization has brought sight-restoration and blindness-prevention treatment to many millions of people in the developing world since 1963. Operation Eyesight seeks to create high-quality eye care and community development programs that are self-sustaining and able to provide the best service for the world's poorest people.

In the early 1960's many Canadians became aware that great numbers of people in India were threatened by blindness and low vision, leading to the creation of Operation Eyesight. From the beginning, this organization has emphasized capacity building and sustainability by supplying local medical professionals with the training, equipment and facilities required to help their own people. Inspired by Dr. Ben Gullison, a Canadian physician working in Andhra Pradesh, Operation Eyesight became a partnership between generous Canadians and Indian eye doctors. Today, this relationship continues with donors from Canada and around the world supporting the efforts of physicians and community development teams in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Zambia and other parts of Africa. All parties involved are guided by the principle of "the best for the poorest," working toward the day when all people have access to reliable eye care.

Headquartered in Calgary, Canada, Operation Eyesight has offices in Vancouver and Toronto, as well as international offices in India, Australia and the USA. Further information is available on the internet at http://www.operationeyesight.com/.
